Taxi Driver Licence – Law

Under UK Law all Taxi Drivers (also known as Hackney Cab Drivers) and Private Hire Drivers are required to be licensed by their Local Authority. Councils responsible for licensing all Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles and Drivers in the Greater Liverpool area are; Liverpool City Council, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral Borough Councils.

Part of the licensing process for Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Drivers includes a Driver Medical Examination and the DVLA recommends that Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Drivers should meet the same medical standards as bus (PCV) and lorry (HGV/LGV) drivers.

As at October 2017 Liverpool City Council allow Taxi Driver Medicals to be carried out by any GP.  Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral Borough Councils require Taxi Driver Medicals to be carried out by the driver’s own GP.  Please contact your Council for their up to date policy in this regard.
